Life is so fragile. The hustle and bustle of our daily lives often makes us forget this. There is only one moment that can be guaranteed: the present moment.
This weekend my sweet friend Paula, lovingly known as Cousin Paula, left this world leaving me in a state of disbelief. I met her in Paris (her favorite city) and we became fast friends. She was so warm and supportive. I was deeply moved when she first said, “you are officially part of the fam now.” The most touching part of that statement was that she truly meant it. As a result of that chance meeting, the trajectory of my life was changed. That meeting actually helped me to move to LA many moons later.
A loved one’s death always makes me consider how we relate to each other.
A Course in Miracles teaches that everyone has an individual curriculum on this planet, and that curriculum is designed to move us from fear to love. When we look at our lives through that prism, we see that nothing happens by chance. You are blessed to meet everyone you meet, for they are a conduit for deepening your love.
As we lean into love, miracles manifest. Miracles are natural expressions of love. It is so easy to love people who are kind to us (like Cousin Paula). The challenge arises when people trigger us and bring up our unhealed parts. This is the moment when we need to pull out our metaphysical and spiritual tool belt. If we focus beyond the trigger, we see that we both want the same thing…to love and to be loved. Though it may not seem that way on the surface, that’s exactly what they are searching for.
In these moments, it is OK to ask for a miracle…to perceive things differently. If someone is not kind to you, it is because they are protecting their wounded self. Ask to see them as the Divine sees them…as the cherished child of the Universe that they are. As you see the innocence in others you will be set free from the chains of suffering. You have been brought together to heal, to forgive, and to love. As you love, you will be loved. Your willingness to give determines what you can have.
So my friends, cherish every moment. Every moment is a chance to love more. Every moment is an opportunity for a miracle! Just in case you forgot, you are the miracle.
